About Us
The SS Red Oak Victory is a restored World War II Victory ship berthed in the former Kaiser Richmond Shipyards as a floating museum. The ship is operated by an all-volunteer crew and is part of the Richmond Museum Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing Richmond’s history.
Mission
Our mission is to relate the stories of those who built and sailed the Red Oak Victory, her missions in the past, and her relevance today to the Richmond area, the State of California, the nation, and the world. Come visit us and you will arrive curious and leave in awe.
Crew
Red Oak Victory is run, maintained, preserved, and represented by an all-volunteer crew. The crew is responsible for much of the work that keeps the ship open to the public and moving forward as a museum ship, historic site, event space, and preservation project.
Crew members support the ship in many different ways. Some welcome visitors, serve as docents, and help tell the stories of the people who built and sailed Red Oak Victory. Others work behind the scenes on engineering and deck work, maintenance, painting, cleaning, restoration, rigging, welding, event support, school field trips, music events, dances, Pancake Breakfasts, marketing, photography, video, writing, and other ship-support work.
The ship’s all-volunteer crew also carries out the steady maintenance and restoration work needed to preserve a large historic vessel. That work includes painting, replacing worn canvas, repairing rigging, maintaining shipboard spaces, supporting restoration projects, and helping care for the deck, superstructure, and equipment.
The crew’s contribution is central to Red Oak Victory’s continued life. Their work allows the ship to remain open for public tours, host community events, support educational programs, and preserve one of the last surviving World War II Victory ships for future generations.
